The Xbox 360 at a glance (the short version of this review)

Game system letter grade (with from A-F): A-

Benefits of the Xbox 360

  • Extra interactivity with the Xbox live.  Who doesn't like having good ol death matches on games like Call of Duty Black Ops, Halo Reach, and Call of Juarez
  • Plenty of classic games, including: Halo 3, Halo Reach, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 1 and 2, Fable 2 and 3, Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion, Grand Theft Auto 4, and many similar games.
  • The Kinect makes working out fun
  • Easy to set up and use
  • Works best with wide screen TV's (at least in my opinion)
  • Movie style feel in many games, such as Red Dead Redemption, the Simpsons game, Mortal Kombat vs DC universe, etc.
  • The games are fun to play with the dual stick controllers.
  • Great for teens through young adults who don't like kiddy games.
  • Useful for parties, such as doing lan parties with various games, such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Halo Reach, etc.
  • Getting more out of the game system with Xbox live arcade
  • Can be used for other things too, such as watching movies, videos as well as connecting on Facebook.
  • This list goes on

Low points of the Xbox 360

  • The ring of death glitch.
  • Low storage space without buying a seperate hard drive
  • Not as kid friendly as the Nintendo Wii
  • Some games can take a very long time to beat, espeically many of the action RPGs that this system offers.
  • Addicting too.  For example, if you get drawn to playing various games on the Xbox live, you could find yourself going for hours on end.
  • It is not the Nintendo Wii  While the Kinnect might be fun for many, it is not quite like the Wii, with the Wii remote and all of the perks that the Wii offers, but goes pretty well with casual gamers.
  • If you opt for the Kinect, expect a work out with many of the games, as many of them will have you running, jumping, "throwing stuff", sitting down, standing up, etc.  The lazier types might like the Wii or the PS move instead/

Here is my detailed review about the Xbox 360

Xbox 360 game of the month: Kinectimals is a fun Xbox 360 Kinect game where you get to adopt a virtual exotic pet tiber, jaguar, panther, or leopard.  The game is similar to games like Nintendogs, except that you get to adopt some exotic pet (beats getting a real exotic pet as some areas are not likely to allow them in real live as well as the inherit dangers of owning a real pet).  By the way, kinectimals is only available to Kinect owners.

I will be honest.  I have been a gamer just about all of my life.  I first joined in the video game business back when I was only a kid, with the regular NES, followed by getting the Sega Genesis, N64 as well as the Sega Dreamcast later on (I even had an SNES emulator for a little while during my college years, which was pretty fun too).  Then I got the Xbox 360 and loved it.  Sure, I was skeptical about the Xbox and Xbox 360 considering that prior to the first Xbox coming out, just about all of the good game systems were made in Japan, and plus until the Xbox, Microsoft had been more of a software company, focusing its products and services for computers (such as Microsoft Windows, Office, as well as games like Age of Empires and Close Combat on the computer).  I liked the Xbox when it came out as many of the games had stunning graphics (better than the Sega Dreamcast), games that I loved.  For example, Knights of the Old Republic and KOTOR 2 were among my favorites as it is probably the first of its' kind, where you are in open ended action role playing game that takes place long before the Star Wars prequel trillogy, where you play as a young jedi apprentice and get to choose your dialogues with other characters, go in spectacular missions as well as being able to determine how the game plays out (your guy can even turn to the dark side and become like Darth Vader if you wanted to).  Also, I never forget doing system link Halo, where you can get together with your buddies, hook each others' game system up to a LAN device and do capture the flag, death matches as well as team games.

Perfect Dark Zero was the first game I played on the Xbox 360 and it definitely is one of my favorite games for the system, especially the death match mode where you can go up against human or robot foes in the different maps offered.  BTW, Perfect Dark Zero can actually make good practice for playing other first person shooters on Xbox live, such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 as you can practice with human or bot opponents, giving you time to practice your first person shooter skills before going up against the more competitive crowd on Xbox live.

Of course, several years later (around 2005), the Xbox 360 came out, and I was pretty excited to be one of the early people to get it (my father works at Microsoft, so he was able to get one for my brothers and I around the time I came out, even though it was sold in limited supply when it first came out) and even played the signature game, Perfect Dark Zero, which I think is a very fun game (almost like a classic James Bond game) where you play as a secret agent, named Johanna as she must infiltrate a shady organization called, the Datadyne and save the day before they can unleashe their diabolical plans on the whole world.  It also came with a very nice mulitplayer feature too as you could go up against your friends, live opponents over the Xbox live or even team up against bots as well.  Since then, I have seen plenty of other games and features I have played and enjoyed.  Some of my favorite games include: Red Dead Redemption, GTA San Andreas (I liked the Southern California feel that was offered in GTA San Andreas), Ghost Busters (you actually felt like you were in the movie version of Ghost Busters, doing paranormal investigations at the different haunted locations around New York city as well as using your photon packs and traps to hunt ghosts), Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, as well as both Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Ultimate Alliance 2. Sure, the Xbox 360 is not going to be for everyone, as many of the games are geared more towards and older crowd (sure there are games geared for kids, but many of the more popular games on the Xbox 360, such as halo, GTA 4, etc are geared towards the young adult crowd), and some models can get glitchy at times (even I have had ot deal with the infamous "ring of death" glitch on a few occassions), and in comparison ot the Wii, I liked using the Wii remote on some of the games (such as the Metroid Prime Trillogy), but the Xbox 360 is definitely a hot system that you are sure to love.   BTW, have any comments about the Xbox 360 you want to share?  Be sure to email me at ryansjones@Xboxfreak.ws and I will share them on this site.
